Sofia - Boyana

Boyana is a well-to-do rural suburb six miles south from the city center. It is worth a visit for the following sites:

National Museum of History

The history museum on Okolovrusten Pat Blvd. exhibits historical items from Neolithic times to the late 19th century. Among the displays there are gold treasures from the Thracian Period, 1000 -100 BC, and Roman antiquities found at sites throughout the country. Other exhibits trace the nation's political and religious history.

Boyana Church

Listed as a world heritage site by UNESCO, this thirteenth century church has 90 of the most impressive frescoes from the Middle Ages to have survived in Bulgaria (although some are damaged). Next door is the National Boyana Church Museum, where copies of the frescoes are exhibited together with other religious items. The adventurous visitor should be aware that the walk from the history museum to the church takes 45 minutes.
